What is "sustainability"?
"Sustainability" is defined to the capacity to endure. In ecology, the word "sustainability" is used to describe the capacity of the ecological and biological system to remain productive, constructive, long-lived, healthy and diverse over time. "Sustainability" accounts for the harmony, maintenance and equity of the environmental, social, economical, political and cultural dimensions. The "three pillars" (3 Es) of "sustainability" are the reconciliation of environmental, social equity and economic demands.
Our Common Future, also known as Brundtland Report from the United Nations World Commission on Environmental and Development (WCED) defined the term "sustainability" in 1987:

What is a "sustainable city"?
The term was first seen in Richard Register's "Ecocity Berkeley: Building Cities for a healthy Future" (1987). The term "sustainable city" was known as "ecocity".
"ecocity" is a city designed with the consideration of environmental impact, inhabited by people dedicated to minimization of required inputs of energy, water and food and waste output of heat, air pollution and water pollution. A Sustainable Oslo
The ambition of the Oslo is to become the leading of the sustainable city in the world. With actions carrying currently and steps planed for the future developments, it is expected that by 2020, Oslo is to be running on thoroughly 100% renewable energy. The strategy being used currently consist the pioneering actions covering all field of sustainability, development has been done from environmentally friendly buildings and public spaces to operating high quality transportation and (waste) recycling systems.
